The Family and Educational Background of Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California. Her mom was Shyamala Gopalan, a native of Chennai, India. Gopalan was the daughter of a diplomat and Indian government official, and she came to the United States in 1960 to pursue a doctorate in nutrition and endocrinology at the University of California-Berkeley. Gopalan’s life ambition was to become involved in cancer research, and that dream was ultimately brought to fruition.
Kamala Harris’s father, Donald Harris, was originally from Jamaica. Like Gopalan, Harris was a graduate student at Berkeley in the early 60s. After obtaining his doctorate, he went on to enjoy a long and distinguished career as an economics professor at Stanford University. In addition to their shared interest in education, Gopalan and Harris were each passionate about the cause of civil rights, which was just beginning to make an impact on college campuses at the time they met.
Kamala Harris often reminisces about the times she spent attending civil rights protests with her parents when she was a small child. The Berkeley campus was one of the centers for 60s student-led activism and protests, and Harris has often said her early experiences gave her “A stroller-eye view of the Civil Rights Movement.
Rejecting expectations that she eventually return to India for an arranged marriage, Dr. Shyamala Gopalan married Donald Harris in 1963, immediately after graduating from Cal-Berkeley. The two eventually had two children, both girls: Kamala, born in 1964, and Maya, born in 1966.
Gopalan was a practicing Hindu, and she chose to give her daughters names that reflected her spiritual beliefs. Kamala is another name for Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and good fortune, while Kamala’s middle name Devi is a Sanskrit word that means ‘goddess.’ “A culture that worships goddesses produces strong women,” Dr. Gopalan told an interviewer in 2004.
During her childhood, Kamala learned to appreciate her diverse birthright. “I grew up in a strong Indian culture and I was raised in a black community,” she recalls. Along with her sister, she sang in the church choir of an African-American Baptist church. Yet the two girls also frequently visited a Hindu temple to participate in services with their mother.
Throughout her childhood and teen years, Harris and the family frequently traveled to both India and Jamaica. Each parent wanted her and her younger sister Maya to learn more about their heritage, connect with extended family and keep in touch with their roots. These trips were formative experiences for Harris, who became especially close with her maternal grandparents during her visits to India. “My earliest memories are of walking along the beach with my grandfather and his friends,” she recalls. “They were retired public servants who spent their careers trying to make India a better place.”
Her grandfather, P.V. Gopalan, worked in India’s equivalent to the U.S. Department of State. Among his many experiences traveling the globe, he spent time serving as an advisor to the government of Zambia in Africa. Her maternal grandmother, Rajam Gopalan, was also involved in public affairs in India. She participated in campaigns to help poor women gain greater access to birth control, at a time when the country’s population was exploding.
Growing up in the company of high achievers and people with a strong social consciousness, it seems that Kamala Harris was destined for a career in public service. She identifies her mom, who enjoyed a long and celebrated career as a cancer researcher, teacher and civil rights activist, as the greatest hero in her life.
But Harris’s childhood was not entirely idyllic. When she was seven and her sister five, her parents separated and eventually divorced. After a long and fairly contentious court battle, an Oakland family court judge granted her mother full custody of both children in 1972.
From this time on, Donald Harris became a sporadic presence in his children’s lives. He didn’t abandon them completely. However, over time his relationships with his daughters became more distant. There were no harsh feelings, but Harris did not have the same kind of influence in their lives as their mother. In 1976, Dr. Shyamala Gopalan Harris accepted a research position at Jewish General Hospital and a teaching position at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, where the family remained for the duration of Kamala Harris’s time in school.
Dr. Gopalan Harris stayed in Montreal for 16 years, long after her daughters had returned to the United States. She was credited with some important breakthroughs in her career as a cancer researcher, and never stopped being an inspiration to her daughters even when they were apart. Living in French-speaking Canada, in a cold-weather climate, was a big adjustment for Kamala Harris. Moving there at age 12, she was forced to adjust to classmates who’d grown up in an entirely different culture.
However, by all accounts Harris handled the transition smoothly. She studied at Westmount High School, an English-speaking institution the Montreal suburb of Westmount. Former classmates and friends describe her as a good student who was cheerful, upbeat and confident. Harris “gave off an aura suggesting she was poised for success,” said ex-classmate Paul Olioff, who is now an academic advisor at McGill University.
Her high school was economically and racially diverse. But Harris found ways to bridge the gaps in outlook and life experience that kept other kids apart. “Westmount High was a very racially segregated school when we attended,” Olioff explained. “Ms. Harris transcended this, as there were few students she didn’t get along with.” Dean Smith, another former classmate asked to share his memories of Harris, identified her as a “hard-studying student who helped classmates with schoolwork and preferred to spend time with average kids rather than moneyed elites.”
In addition to her reputation as a good student, Harris was also recognized for her dancing skills. She joined with other students in an amateur dancing group called Midnight Magic, which performed at community events and senior citizen’s centers and was active raising money for charity.
As for Harris herself, she remembers her five years living in Montreal with some fondness. But she never really accepted it as home. In her senior-year high school yearbook, she listed “California” as her most cherished memory. When asked a few years ago by a Montreal newspaper reporter to speak about her time living in Quebec, she said that she and her sister had made friends there and had learned to speak a limited amount of French. But “we were happy to return home to California,” she admitted.
Before making that return trip to the state of her birth, however, Harris had another stop to make. After graduating from Westmount in 1981 she was determined to continue her education, and perhaps foreshadowing her future as a U.S. senator she chose to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Currently, serving as a Senator representing California in the US Senate, Kamala has also unveiled plans of vying for Presidency in the forthcoming 2020 US election. Kamala was installed as a member of the State Bar of California in 1990 and in the same year, she was made a deputy district attorney. She served in that position in Alameda County for eight years ending in 1998. After her stint as a deputy attorney, Kamala earned several appointments to different state boards until 2000. She was recruited by San Francisco’s City attorney Louise Renne in 2000 and while she was there, she handled several civil code enforcement cases.
Three years later, she triumphed over a two-term incumbent Terence Hallinan to win the District Attorney of the City and County of San Francisco in 2003. Serving under the governance of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the attorney made a huge impact in the judicial system of San Francisco. She was re-elected for the same position in 2007. Following her great work ethics and top-notch record, Kamala quickly rose through the ranks and was installed as the Attorney General of California in 2010.
She served in that capacity for six years and in 2016; following the retirement of the California’s Senator Barbara Boxer, she declared her intention to run for the California’s senatorial seat. Since then, she has been representing California in the United States Senate under Trump’s administration.
Just recently, in January 2019, Kamala announced her interest in contesting for Presidency in the forthcoming 2020 US elections. Following her standing records and excellent achievements, Kamala would undoubtedly pulled a lot of stunts in the election. If she wins, she would become the first balck female president and the first South-Asian to serve in that position.

Harris with Her Husband
Kamala Harris was born to Donald Harris and his wife Shyamala Harris. Her dad, originally from Jamaican works as an economics professor at Stanford University while her mother is a breast cancer scientist from India. Her parents both met each other while studying at the University of California, Berkeley. Kamala was raised by her mother after parents separated when she was seven. She is just one sibling, a sister named Maya Harris. She currently works a political analyst at MSNBC network. Their parents divorced when she was just seven years old. Kamala grew up in a very traditional and culture prone setting. She attended Baptist Church where she and her sister sang with the church choir; they also went to Hindu temples along with her mother.
While she has become successful in life, Kamala fell in love with a man named Douglas Emhoff. Just like Harris, Douglas is equally an attorney in California and has previously worked for a Los Angeles-based law firm called Venable LLP. The lovely couple met each other back in 2014 and started their relationship after a while. After a few months, they tied the knot in August 2014; their wedding took place in a Courthouse at Santa Barbara County. Prior to their marriage, Douglas previously had two kids from his past relationship. After his marriage to Kamala, she adopted his two children as her own children. Kamala and her amazing family currently reside in a mansion in Brentwood, California.
The Senators of California: Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein
A senator from California is Kamala Harris and she is fifty four years old and was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Howard University but she also got a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of California. Her dad taught at Stanford University as an economics professor who is Jamaican. Kamala Harris’s mom was actually a breast cancer scientists who claims she is Tamil Indian. Harris is part of the democratic party and has achieved a great deal of accomplishes for example she was the 27th District Attorney of San Francisco from January 8, 2004 till January 3, 2011. Another job she achieved is the 32nd Attorney General of California from 2011 until 2017. Kamila Harris recently has been the senator for California, beginning in January 2017 and is still completing her term.
Another Senator from California that I researched is named Dianne Feinstein. Diane Feinsten who will be eighty-six years old. She was born on June 22, 1933, in the city of San Francisco. Feinstein’s mom was a model and while dad had a career as a surgeon. She’s actually been divorced three times but has conceived a daughter from one of her marriages. She attended Stanford University and got her Bachelor degree in history successfully. She claims to be a part of the Democratic Party with many jobs as a politician. She started as part of the San Francisco Board of Supervisor starting on January 8, 1970 till December 4, 1978 but soon after she became the mayor of the city, she was born in ending her term on January 8, 1988. Dianne Feinstein continued on from here and chair of the Senate rules committee starting in January 3, 2007 and ending on January 3, 2009. She then became chair for Senate Intelligence Committee and for the Narcotic caucus starting immediately after her previous job and ending on January 3, 2015. An interesting fact about her is that she will be the longest serving female senator once she finished her current term.
I researched my congressional representative for my district which I found out was Lou Correa. Lou Correa was born on January 24, 1958 meaning he is sixty-four years old and was born in the city of Anaheim. Mr. Correa is successfully married and has four children with his wife. He attended Cal State Fullerton in which he got his Bachelor’s Degree from and he then attended UCLA from which he got a Juris Doctor Degree and Master of Business Administration. He is a part of the democratic party and was elected as a Representative on January 3, 2017. A political job he had before his current job was a member of the California Senate which started on December 4, 2006 and ended on November 30, 2014.
Dianne Feinstein has been a part of several committees and they are the Committee on Appropriations, Judiciary, Intelligence, and finally a Committee on Rules and Administration. The first committee is on Appropriation which sends federal money to different types of organizations, departments, and agencies depending who they pick. The Judiciary committee keeps the Department of Justice and all its agencies, it deals with nominations with executive positions for the Department of Justice and all its agencies, considers judge nominations, and also considers pending legislation. The Select Committee on Intelligence oversees all the agencies that provide information to the Legislative and Executive Branches. Finally, the Committee on Rules and Administration deals with the rules of the Senate, administration of congressional buildings, the members of the Senate requirements and qualifications which also includes the responsibility for contested elections. None of these committees deal with issues that have direct relevance to my community. I am not surprised by the information I discovered because it seems like standard things a Senator would do.
The committees that Kamala Harris is involved with are the Committee on the Budget, Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Committee on the Judiciary, and the Select Committee on Intelligence. The last two committees have already been mentioned before in the previous paragraph so there will only be explanations for the first two committees in this paragraph. The Committee on the Budget sets the budget framework for congressional actions. The Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs oversees the general government activities but focuses on overseeing the Department of Homeland Security. It also studies the economy and how laws to reorganize the Executive and Legislative Branches work. None of these committees deal with issues directly relevant to my community. I am surprised that Kamala Harris is on the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and what that committee does.
Lou Correa is apart of two committees, the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Homeland Security. The House Committee on Homeland Security provides oversight to the development of the Department of Homeland Security. The House Judiciary Committee deals with impeachment of government officials and ensures justice within federal courts, agencies, and other government entities. None of these committees deal with issues directly relevant to my community. I am a little surprised by what I learned. I did not know that the Senate and House had similar committees but perform different functions. I am also surprised that Lou Correa is not in that many committees.
From 1992 to 2016, there has been a trend of low voter turnout. This is due to a multitude of reasons. Restrictive voting laws, gerrymandering, and the heated nature of politics are some of the reasons for low voter turnout. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, “In 2016, 14 states had new voting restrictions in place for the first time in a presidential election,” and also on the same page, it mentions that since 2010, 25 states have added new voter restriction laws. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the majority of voters are above the age of 29 and are White but not Hispanic. As an American citizen, ways to increase voting would be to encourage your friends to vote. You can also join an organization that encourages voting. The only way to increase voting is to increase awareness on how and where you can vote and show the effects it has on our country.

His website continues: ‘The Kamala plan for Medicare for all is based on the progress of Obamacare, it immediately improves the adoption of Medicare and moves the country to Medicare, where we are all located so that we can close insurance and pharmaceutical companies. Kamala believes we must fight for working families to increase wages, lower the cost of living and fight sexism, racism and economic preferences in our economy, so that every American has a real chance ‘.
The Harris campaign website continues: ‘For this reason, Kamala, as president, will primarily increase the incomes of working-class and middle-class families. According to her plan, she will return President Trump’s billions of dollars in tax cuts for large corporations and 1% of the richest, and using this money to provide working families up to $ 6,000 tax breaks every year is not just the beginning, and Kamala will be difficult to stimulate the economy to increase wage unions, earning a minimum of $ 15 nationally and imposing stricter fines on companies that betray their employees, and while Kamala is fighting for fair wage tax, it will try to limit the rising costs that prevent Americans from sleeping at night. The income tax law provides tax breaks for people who spend a hundred or more of their rental income and utility bills. federal government minds about child care so that working families do not pay more than 7% of their child care income. Campaign website Kamala Harris states: ‘If Congress does not send comprehensive weapons safety laws, including general controls, to Harris’s office during the first 100 days of his presidency, he will ban weapons and repeal immunity laws for manufacturers and distributors of corporate weapons: executive measures have been taken to guarantee the safety of our children and our communities ‘.
The website contains the following political suggestions: “Insist on an almost universal verification of biographical data, which requires all those who sell five or more weapons a year to check the biography of all arms sales. Revokes the licenses of arms manufacturers and dealers who violate the law and prosecute the most heinous criminals, regardless of whether they are protected by the Arms Trade Act (PLCAA). Invest in President Trump’s dangerous change in the definition of ‘Refugee in court’, which has allowed thousands of refugees to be arrested in anticipation of war guarantees. Close ‘Fugue of spouses’ to prevent the purchase of weapons by violent domestic spouses. conducting general checks on biographical data, updating offensive weapons and banning Harris, who supports the PLCAA, will fight to turn these weapons into a federal crime, ban high-volume magazines, ban and condemn federal hatred for arms purchases
Kamala Harris’ campaign website states: ‘As president, Kamala can use four key levers to change criminal law policies. He can: (1) work with Congress and use its leader to change the law and change federal-level policies, (2) a survey of state and local actors by the Department of Citizens’ Rights of the Ministry of Justice, (3) improve and promote behavior at the state and local level at the expense of federal funds and ( 4) ‘make your voice heard as president. Changes are underway. And as president, Kamala will use each of these levers to improve public security, reduce our vast criminal justice system and improve its justice and greater justice for all. ‘
The following guidelines are listed on its website: ‘(1) End mass deprivation of freedom and invest in community trials and programs that reduce crime and help create safe and healthy communities. (2) The main work of law enforcement should be to build trust and responsibility towards the communities it serves. (3) The system should treat people fairly and humanly. (4) The system must protect the vulnerable. ‘
Kamala Harris campaign website states: ‘Kamala believes this will require American leadership and a president who will remain true to our values at home and abroad. This means that the United States must fight with friends and allies. While in the White House, President Trump has undermined the associations and institutions we have built around the world for decades, and Kamala believes that the United States will be stronger if we invest in our critical relationships and alliances ever since: NATO relations with partners like Japan, India, Mexico and Korea, if the nuclear threat posed by North Korea and Iran, chaos and oppression in Venezuela or the fight against unfair trade practices in China are more effective in tackling the problem global obeys if we work in harmony with our partners.
