A White Heron is a short story written by author Sarah Orne Jewett in 1886. This short story is about a young girl named Sylvia who moves in to live with her grandmother in the country. One day Sylvia decides to go explore the woods near her grandmother’s house and while exploring the wood, Sylvia runs into a young man who is a hunter. The young man is searching for a rare bird, which Sylvia had seen before and is now left between helping this young man she has fallen in love with to please him or keeping the rare bird safe after developing a deep love for nature and the animals around her. Ultimately Sylvia is unable to tell the young man where the rare bird, the white heron, was, which causes him to leave disappointed and leaving Sylvia wondering if she had made the right choice. The hunter seems to be representing masculinity, by being this tough hunter who wants to conquer and kill nature and all these innocent and rare animals, whereas Sylvia stands for femininity, innocence, and purity, and can almost be depicted as part of nature, respectful and protective of it. Sylvia wants to find her own identity, her own voice, but it is difficult when she has an urge to succumb to this masculine hunter and feels she must play a specific role. She is trying to discover the place she is meant to occupy in society and in the world in general, by remaining strong and independent, Sylvia is able to reject the typical roles of women.

Throughout the story we can see signs that the woman in the story establish and maintain some type of hierarchy and independence, the women in the story demonstrate they are capable to care for themselves. When the author wrote, “if the creature had not given good milk and plenty of it, the case would have seemed very different to her owners”. This leads the reader to infer that Mrs.Tilley and Sylvia not only depend on the cow for milk, but also for their own living and overall welfare. Readers can see that Mrs. Tilley and all the other woman in the story do not depend on a husband, man, or even a son for financial independence establishes them each as an individuals that are capable of self-sufficiency. In addition, the statement suggests that Mrs. Tilley is a skilled woman that has the ability to operate and maintain her homestead. Mrs. Tilley runs some kind of independent operation, giving her a characteristic and giving the appearance that she is most likely the head of the household, demonstrating that without the aid of men, a feminine only home can run properly. It actually turns out that Sylvia’s grandmother is in fact head of her household. When Sylvia brings the hunter back to her home, Sylvia wonders, “would not her grandmother consider her much to blame?” which is then followed by the cow who “a loud moo by way of explanation”. This demonstrates that both Sylvia and the cow somehow feel the need to provide account for their actions reflects the authority of Mrs. Tilley. Sylvia’s anxiety and the cow’s offering demonstrate some kind of social order and structure within the homestead, led by Mrs. Tilley. During this scene, Sylvia’s grandmother is standing in the doorway, guarding her home similar how the typical man might traditionally guard his.

The homestead appears to be calm and peaceful until the young man shows up, but the resistance and power of Sylvia overcome the force of the hunter and his intimidation fails. The author illustrates the young man’s inferior state through his youth, his refusal to fall under a feminine world, and, ultimately, through Sylvia’s decision of rejecting him. At the beginning of the story Sylvia hears the young man and she hears “a boy’s whistle,” notice how she does not call it a man’s whistle. By classifying the hunter into someone who hasn’t fully matured, the author heightens the authority and status of the much more mature and older Mrs. Tilley. The young man continues to display immaturity when he is asked about the birds he replies “Oh no, they’re stuffed and preserved, dozens and dozens of them…and I have shot or snared every one myself”. The phrase “dozens and dozens” is somewhat a childish response and his grammar is consistent with a child’s grammar and speech, while the way he brags about how he hunted birds and his pride in his hunting skills reveals he is not as manly as they thought. Mrs. Tilley’s reaction, too, shows this age gap. During the sportsman’s talk, the narrator intrudes. The sportsman says, “…ever since I was a boy,” and the narrator interjects “. The narrator’s use of parentheses here draws attention to Mrs. Tilley’s reaction. Her amusement illustrates a woman as more knowledgeable, more worldly, and more practical than a man, and this upsets the normative order of gender. Mrs. Tilley, like the audience, recognizes the man as a boy, and his masculinity as an outdated dominator next to the growing agency of femininity. The scale of values at work in “A White Heron” may not be ambiguous, but the characters do quite a bit of grappling for status. Sylvia sits between this struggle. Her choice to protect the heron, a part of the feminine Nature, rather than helping the young, passive-aggressive male, causes the ultimate shift in the status of the genders.

Sarah Orne Jewett’s “A White Heron” shows the growth of the female voice, specifically Sylvia’s, in the world of “the man” and the moral dilemma. The character of Sylvia is written as a young girl in Maine, living with her grandmother in a tiny shack in farmland. It is here that she learns to take a stand for her own beliefs and comes to an understanding of what is expected of her, and what she expects of herself.

Jewett makes a point to illustrate the scenery, painting the little girl into that, rather than painting the scenery around the girl, showing the reader that the girl, while not an intruder, is a guest in the quiet woods. That is, until a “tall young man, who carried a gun over his shoulder” whistles in her direction and asks “whether you think I can spend the night at your house, and go out gunning early in the morning.” Sylvia experiences a schoolgirl crush and – as she didn’t speak before – says nothing except to frightfully mutter her name when asked repeatedly. It is the schoolgirl crush that almost causes her to betray her inner voice. The stranger is an ornithologist, and his goal is to find the legendary white heron that lives in the woods surrounding Sylvia’s house. The young girl takes an interest, because this man pay attention to her, teaches her, talks to her, and she does her own hunting, silently creeping through the woods to try and find this elusive white heron.

It’s not until the end of the story that Sylvia “gains” her voice. It’s not a voice that rings out through the air; it’s an inner voice that sounds strongly inside of her, and enables her to keep a precious secret: the location of the mysterious white heron. This stranger, whose name is never given, is planning to kill the white heron, and once Sylvia has seen the bird’s beauty, its majestic nature, she becomes conflicted. She comes across the location by accident, but once she does, she’s mesmerized and the narrator paints a picture of pure splendor, saying “look, look! a white spot of him like a single floating feather comes up from the dead hemlock and grows larger, and rises, and comes close at last, and goes by the landmark pine with steady sweep of wing and outstretched slender neck and crested head.” It’s this magnificence that eventually gives Sylvia enough courage to keep her mouth shut, rather than, ironically, getting the courage to speak up.

The female voice that Sylvia develops requires an exceptional amount of bravery. This captivating stranger is offering ten dollars to anyone who can show him the bird, and Sylvia knows how much money this amounts to, how much it could be of benefit to their household. And as the story comes to a close, Jewett writes that “Sylvia does not speak after all, though the old grandmother fretfully rebukes her, and the young man’s kind appealing eyes are looking straight into her own.” But the memory of the bird prompts her to keep her mouth shut, to keep that one sliver of natural beauty locked away as a secret between the trees and herself. She has found her own voice by not saying a word, and by not following the persuading of the young man’s eyes. Instead of being influenced by the idea of ten dollars – quite the fortune – Sylvia shows that sometimes, silence is courage.

Sylvia also finds her voice, not only in the “man’s world,” by refusing the strangers generous offer, but by overcoming the moral dilemma of either telling the stranger the whereabouts of the bird, or keeping it to herself. Money aside, what other reason does Sylvia have to tell the stranger where the bird is? There is also the issue of her conscience. Does Sylvia want the money so bad that she would be willing to betray a secret she was unknowingly entrusted with? To her credit, Sylvia doesn’t seem to hesitate to not say anything. The issue of whether or not she should speak up, and her decision, is a testament to her character. Ten dollars offered and she says “no” because “she cannot give the heron’s life away.” This shows the depth of her character, her growth as a girl. She starts the story as a cautious young child, afraid of speaking to actually human beings, and with the arrival of this gun-toting stranger, transforms into a cautious young woman, aware of the consequences of revealing the secrets of something that doesn’t belong to her.

Sylvia is faced with the issue of “for love or for money.” She could give up the location of the white heron; lead the stranger to the nest of the graceful, white bird, because there is money involved, money that she and her grandmother could use to support themselves for time to come. On the other hand, she could feign knowledge, and give the prospect of the money up, which is what she does. The decision she makes doesn’t haunt her, which is a testimony to her inner strength, and she “forgot even her sorrow at the sharp retort of his gun.” She also asks herself an important question: “Were the birds better friends than their hunter might have been, – who can tell?” The answer is yes, even if Sylvia doesn’t know it yet, because she’ll always have this veiled secret that she and she alone has been confided with.

As the story comes to a close, Sylvia is described as a child who carries secrets of the land around her, and potentially, of the people around her. The valor she displays in thrusting away the “great world” for the bird’s sake is the culmination of her inner voice stemming up and taking charge. Its Sylvia’s way of saying “It’s my life. I’m taking a stand.” Jewett writes the character of Sylvia as the young girl sprouting her wings and taking flight, soaring over the world of the influential man, and over the issue of “will she, won’t she.” Sylvia is the young girl who plays a detrimental role in the growing of all young women. It is always interesting to me to read a story through the mind of a child—it is what makes classics such as Harry Potter so compelling and (pardon the pun) magical. Something about the innocence and wonderful nature of children intrigues me and makes for a whimsical read—even if the narrator is not the child herself. Such is the case for Sarah Orne Jewett’s A White Heron, a short story that tells a tale of a young girl’s adventure through the woods.

The language in this story is rife with descriptions that both create the character of Sylvia and establish the setting in a very effective and concise way—and, as well, the relationship between the two of them. Phrases like “the cow taking slow steps and the child very fast ones” (2) evokes detailed images through indirect characterization, and “She waded on through the brook as the cow moved away, and listened to the thrushes with a heart that beat fast with pleasure” (2) clearly establishes the character’s positive feelings towards the woodland environment. The fact that these two sentences are in the same paragraph bolsters the claim of the author’s concision.

Another example of Sylvia’s youthful energy and love for the forest can be found on page 4, when Jewett writes, “But Sylvia was watching a hop-toad in the narrow footpath.” The girl not paying attention to the grown-up and instead watching a toad conveys her fascination with the setting and her childlike inattentiveness. Shortly following that sentence, the young man reveals to her his goal, and the narrator goes into a detailed description of the little girl’s thoughts:

Sylvia’s heart gave a wild beat; she knew that strange white bird, and had once stolen softly near where it stood in some bright green swamp grass, away over at the other side of the woods. There was an open place where the sunshine always seemed strangely yellow and hot, where tall, nodding rushes grew, and her grandmother had warned her that she might sink in the soft black mud underneath and never be heard of more (4-5).

This excerpt is full of descriptives; it furthers the relationship between Sylvia and the forest. Her heart giving a “wild beat” signifies her eagerness for the forest and her fierce energy and love for it.

Later, in arguably the most important part of the story, Sylvia climbs the large tree to try to spot the white heron for the young man. Examples of personification abound—such as “tree asleep” (6) and “tree stood still and frowned” (7)—as well as imagery depicting her struggle to climb: “The way was harder than she thought; she must reach far and hold fast, the sharp dry twigs caught and held her and scratched her like angry talons” (7). This conflict creates tension effectively and makes her ultimate success all the more meaningful.

When she gets to the top, she realizes that she cannot betray the beautiful bird in a beautifully written and descriptive paragraph:

No, she must keep silence! What is it that suddenly forbids her and makes her dumb? . . . The murmur of the pine’s green branches is in her ears, she remembers how the white heron came flying through the golden air and how they watched the sea and the morning together, and Sylvia cannot speak; she cannot tell the heron’s secret and give its life away (8).

The way this is written makes it seem like the top of a tree—especially for a youthful girl still finding herself amidst the forest—is a fitting place for to have such an important realization.

“A White Heron” is a story that discussed about power of choice and what is better for life over all. Jewett shows that although people are unable to see the truth in front of them, if you dig deep enough there is a way to recollect your true self no matter what age.

Another symbol used by Jewett is the gun held by the hunter. This symbolizes maturity in Sylvia and her sexual comfort around the hunter. At first, it shows that the gun makes Sylvia nervous, but as her crush begins to develop, she becomes more comfortable with it. “Thus, the young man’s relationship with Sylvia is treated as a struggle between a young girl retaining her innocence and the man who would dominate her” (Freivogel 136). Although Jewett does not mention sexuality, she is suggesting to the reader how the gun is taking away Sylvia’s innocence as she grows into a teenager. The hunter and his gun both represent the first inducement of Sylvia from the natural world into human relationships. “[The hunter] watched Sylvia’s pale face and shining gray eyes with ever growing enthusiasm” (Jewett 415). In her well know nature world she had never come across something like what this gun and hunter symbolize. This is important to the overall work because Jewett is showing the world how innocence can be left behind when you fall into temptation. Sylvia would most likely have seen the reality sooner if she were older.

In continuation, a third symbol that is overlooked is the oak and pine trees. These trees may not seem of such a large importance, but this is the one symbol that both Sylvia and the reader see the importance of them. When Sylvia climbs the tall oak tree, she later branches on to a taller pine tree. Jewett is trying to show her journey back to her nature relationship is long and hard, but is possible if you put in work. In Hovet’s scholarly article, he shares how Sylvia is portrayed as a hero. “The first type of this function consists of the hero withstanding the test. Sylvia makes the dangerous pass and climbs through the lower branches of the old pine” (Hovet 66). Sylvia takes note of the feelings rushing through her as she climbs up the tree, representing a grasp of what is left of her innocence to pull her back. The hunter has lured her away from her nature relationship, and she was too blind to see what was happening because she was too young and had never experienced this sort of human relationship prior. This symbol is important to the overall work because Jewett demonstrates how by reconnecting to your true relationships, it can open up windows to the truth. This aided Sylvia because, without this reconnection, she would’ve drowned away her innocence because of her inability to see the reality of what was occurring.

Jewett provides imagery throughout the story to help aid in describing what Sylvia sees and hears in the nature of the forest. When Sylvia reconnects with nature, the imagery in the story comes to life as she connects, not just with animals, but even the sun and the breeze. This is a feeling Sylvia familiarized with, unlike the hunter and his gun. Although Sylvia could see the hunter and was tempted by him, the power of nature swooped in and grabbed onto Sylvia to bring her back to the nature side. There is nothing said between the heron and Sylvia, but Jewett uses imagery of silence and a description of the view of nature to allow the reader to capture Sylvia’s transformation back to her relationship with nature.

Later on, when Sylvia climbs the pine tree and relinks with nature, Jewett is using imagery of Sylvia’s rebirth. It is also implied that the rebirth of being in a womb for 9 months is shown through her age, nine. This imagery is important to the story because it demonstrates how Sylvia is still developing and needs to hold onto her roots of nature until she is truly ready to face the world, just as if it were her mother. It is also in this moment when Sylvia realizes how man and nature have a difficult time existing side-by-side. Sylvia may have been too young to realize this when bumping paths with the hunter, but now, at age nine and rebirthed, she is able to see the truth around her by recombining herself with nature. “Sylvia’s face was like a pale star, if one had seen it from the ground, when the last thorny bough was past, and she stood trembling and tired but wholly triumphant, high in the tree-top” (Jewett 418). Jewett uses imagery of Sylvia as a star to show her innocence and the thorny bough as her difficult journey of finding the truth. At first, Sylvia is ecstatic about finding the heron, but on her trip back to the farm her feelings begin to alter. “Jewett permits the reader to share Sylvia’s thoughts all through the long climb to the top of the pine, the subsequent discovery of the heron’s nest, and the dangerous descent” (Zanger 348).

Jewett brings the story to an end with an unambiguous ending of whether or not Sylvia feels as if she made the right decision. Although she was offered money to bring back the white heron, it is mainly her crush on the hunter that is driving her to help him more than anything. She is tied between her infatuation with the hunter, and her love for nature. “He is so well worth making happy… No, she must keep silence!” (Jewett 419). She is also pushed to pursue this human relationship to please her grandmother, but has such a strong bond with nature and has a hard time letting go once she is reminded how meaningful it is. When Sylvia sees the heron she is confused by the mixed emotions she feels. “Our most immediate desire is that Sylvia remain in her innocent world, inviolate. But we also are made to want strength for her innocence that it might fend for itself- not a further retirement, but a compelling vision, an experience beside which anything promised by the thrill of infatuation for the hunter would pale” (Atkinsons 72). Jewett is showing how Sylvia has never felt these torn feelings before because of her young age and innocence.

In addition, Sylvia also lacks confidence to stand up for what she believes in. She has a desire to make the hunter happy, but also to defend the heron because of her values of nature. “Sylvia’s heart gave a wild beat; she knew that strange white bird, and had once stolen softly near where it stood in some bright green swap grass, away over at the other side of the woods” (Jewett 416). She is torn between whom to make happy, so she believes that by not telling the hunter she knows where the heron is, she is able to satisfy both sides. This is important to the work of the story because Jewett is demonstrating to the reader that Sylvia is too young and innocent to stand up for what she truly believes in. Sylvia is such a caring character that it hurts for her not to be able to make everyone happy. It might appear that Sylvia is satisfied with her choices, but she is truly not quite sure if she made the correct decision. If she were to bring the heron to the hunter, her life could possibly have led to different path. Although Sylvia ponders what could’ve been and “whatever treasures were lost to her,” but she does not live with regret, Jewett is just trying to show readers how even at a young age, important decisions will need to be made and cannot be taken back. (Jewett 419).

Sylvia’s innocence was shown to have played an important role in her decision making, as represented through symbols, imagery, and an open-ended conclusion. As children progress out of childhood and into adulthood, decisions need to be made, but based on the level of innocence and age it can be difficult to see the reality. Temptations can blind an individual from reality, but it is up to the person’s decision making to determine their ending.

For decades, the female gender has been perceived alongside and linked to that gentle, soothing gift which God has bestowed upon the world – a symbol of something that gives more than it receives, that feels compassion and mercy more than hatred and greed. Sylvia is the timid little girl who befriends the animals of the forest and becomes one with nature. While Sylvia lives her humble days quietly, her peace is suddenly intruded upon by a young man with a gun. He approaches kindly, and not long after makes a good companion out of Sylvia. Sylvia finds this intruder fascinating, and at one point even dreams of romance with him. During the times she has spent following the young man on his quest for birds and watched him shoot down “some unsuspecting singing creature from its bough,” Sylvia does not object to the man’s actions at all. She remains silent, docile, and yet in her heart condemns the man’s actions – puzzles at the man’s show of his “love” for birds. Sylvia, representing nature and femininity as a whole, does not understand why he shoots them and stuffs them if he adores birds so much. She considers that she would much prefer the young man without his weapon, an idea which highlights her feminine instincts of tenderness and opposing violence.

Moreover, the typical female passivity of Jewett’s time is emphasized through Sylvia’s complacence towards the young man. Even though Sylvia is the girl of the woods, the young man is nevertheless the one who leads their walks. She never takes charge, or argues with him about his killing of the birds. Hence, not only has the young man disrupted Sylvia’s and nature’s peace, but he has also taken charge of the land in which he, unlike Sylvia, is a stranger to. His dominance is a work of his own; nature, along with the little girl as a representative, have been too naïve and innocent to see any reason to drive him out, too compassionate in accepting his presence, without questioning the way he appeared or doubting his intentions of staying. It doesn’t seem to dawn on Sylvia that the young man may only be keeping her close for his own benefit. Jewett has made it clear to readers that his primary objective is to hunt down a white heron. When Mrs. Tilley, Sylvia’s grandmother, speaks about her remarkable “woods-girl” trait to the point that the wild creatures count her as one of their own, the man can’t help but be amused and grow a sudden, great interest towards the girl. Sylvia, representing nature and femininity as a whole, does not understand why he shoots them and stuffs them if he adores birds so much. She considers that she would much prefer the young man without his weapon, an idea which highlights her feminine instincts of tenderness and opposing violence.

Even though Sylvia is the girl of the woods, the young man is nevertheless the one who leads their walks. She never takes charge, or argues with him about his killing of the birds. Hence, not only has the young man disrupted Sylvia’s and nature’s peace, but he has also taken charge of the land in which he, unlike Sylvia, is a stranger to. His dominance is a work of his own; nature, along with the little girl as a representative, have been too naïve and innocent to see any reason to drive him out, too compassionate in accepting his presence, without questioning the way he appeared or doubting his intentions of staying. It doesn’t seem to dawn on Sylvia that the young man may only be keeping her close for his own benefit. Jewett has made it clear to readers that his primary objective is to hunt down a white heron. When Mrs. Tilley, Sylvia’s grandmother, speaks about her remarkable “woods-girl” trait to the point that the wild creatures count her as one of their own, the man can’t help but be amused and grow a sudden, great interest towards the girl. Nature and Character in “A White Heron” and “The Open Boat”

Realism, as William Dean Howells declared, involves “the young writer who attempts to report the phrase and carriage of everyday life” (641-642). This mode of expression essentially boils down to individual writers’ perspectives on life, and includes elements such as regional realism as well as local color. Nonetheless, realist pieces are typically character-centered. Sarah Orne Jewett’s “A White Heron” and Stephen Crane’s “The Open Boat” are both centered around a character or a group of characters; however, the difference arises when one examines the relationship between humans and nature in these two pieces. While both “A White Heron” and “The Open Boat” are character-centered pieces, the former piece demonstrates that humans ultimately have the ability to control nature, whereas the latter piece shows how humans are powerless in the face of nature. Crane makes his ominous themes readily apparent. While the characters in “The Open Boat” are very much aware of their dooming situation, they have a difficult time truly placing themselves in the context of nature. Within the first few paragraphs of the piece, readers discover that the men have a literal sense of blindness when thrown in the middle of the non-human world. The narrator states, “As each slaty wall of water approached, it shut all else from the view of the men in the boat” (Crane, 991). This literal blindness also represents a larger, metaphorical blindness to their situation. Since the men are unable to see around them, they are also unable to comprehend their environment and their insignificant place in nature. When the men are placed in the context of nature, they are so dwarfed that it renders them literally and metaphorically blind. Readers see this theme resurface when the correspondent reflects on his situation throughout the piece. One example of this occurs near the end of the narrative: “He thought: ‘I am going to drown? Can it be possible? Can it be possible? Can it be possible?’ Perhaps an individual must consider his own death to be the final phenomenon of nature” (Crane, 1005). Here, the correspondent is having trouble comprehending his place in nature, thinking that it is impossible for nature to doom him to such a cruel fate after everything he has suffered through. This shortsightedness is symbolized, as discussed earlier, by the literal blindness that being in the water causes in him and his comrades; it also foreshadows the theme that man is indeed vulnerable in the “final phenomenon of nature.” Persistence is also an overarching theme in “The Open Boat.” While one could argue that this persistence is simply a result of the men’s situation, one could also point to the unwillingness of humans to accept their oblivion in the face of nature. One demonstration of persistence can be found when the men discover a lighthouse in the distance: “It was precisely like the point of a pin. It took an anxious eye to find a light-house so tiny” (Crane, 993). In spite of their metaphorical and literal blindness, the men strain their eyes to search for any glimmer of hope. Their stubbornness and refusal to accept defeat and give in to the blindness speaks to their inability to accept their insignificant role in nature. In a somewhat similar vein, the men later encounter a large windmill. The encounter causes the correspondent to question nature, regarding the windmill as representing “in a degree, to the correspondent, the serenity of nature amid the struggles of the individual [. . .] She did not seem cruel to him then, nor beneficent, nor treacherous, nor wise. But she was indifferent, flatly indifferent” (Crane, 1003). In this passage, the correspondent realizes the role of man in the presence of nature. It seems as if he begins to accept his utter powerlessness amid nature’s emotionlessness. Ironically, although nature is perceived as character-like in this piece due to its continued and essential presence, nature, without emotions, is the least human presence of all. However, even though this passage quite directly states that nature is “flatly indifferent,” the key to interpretation lies in what happens after this scene. Just as the correspondent begins to accept nature as a powerful, uncaring force, his musings are sharply interrupted by the captain speaking, and the perspective shifts again to the individuals as they continue to row (Crane, 1003-1004). Even though he begins to understand his insignificant role in nature, the correspondent cannot help but apply his continued persistence. This impulse not only speaks to man’s insignificant role in nature, but suggests that the correspondent has a difficult time accepting the truth he has stumbled upon in the face of the windmill, so that he chooses to ignore it and move on. His willful ignorance in the face of truth further solidifies the fact that man is portrayed as being helpless and unimportant.

“A White Heron” certainly takes a staggeringly different, more complex perspective than “The Open Boat” with regards to humans and their relationship with the environment around them. Although the Ornithologist demonstrates a clear control over nature, Sylvia’s relationship with nature is much more complex. Ultimately, by posing this dichotomy, “A White Heron” demonstrates that humans may have the choice to control nature if they would like to do so. Jewett begins by contrasting Sylvia and the Ornithologist as two potential models for relationships between man and nature. In the first few paragraphs of the piece, Sylvia is described as at one with her environment: “It seemed as if she had never been alive at all before she came to live at the farm [. . .] this was a beautiful place to live in, and she should never wish to go home” (Jewett, 527). Right away, this statement establishes that the tone of the piece to be different than Crane’s piece. Sylvia is not at the mercy of nature; rather, she is in harmony with it. This situation will later be contrasted with that of the Ornithologist. The opening scene also describes Sylvia and a cow. Mischievous, the cow stands perfectly still in order to hide herself, but Sylvia and her grandmother don’t mind: “If the creature had not given good milk and plenty of it, the case would have seemed quite different to the owners. Besides, Sylvia had all the time there was” (Jewett, 526). This is the first clue that Sylvia and her grandmother have the option to control the cow (either through forcing it to comply with their will or through deserting it). However, for personal reasons, they choose not to control the cow, and thus Sylvia’s relationship with nature is further established. The Ornithologist’s actions are posed in contrast to Sylvia’s harmonious relationship with nature. Jewett explains, “Sylvia would have liked him vastly better without his gun; she could not understand why he killed the very birds he seemed to like so much” (530). This extract demonstrates a very clear antagonistic relationship between the Ornithologist and nature. Earlier in the piece, the Ornithologist talks about how “I have shot or snared every one myself” (Jewett, 529), referring to his collection of birds. His use of the word “myself” conveys a tone of pride in his work, revealing that he makes a conscious choice to manipulate nature for his own satisfaction and pleasure. This dichotomy comes to a climax in the final scene, when Sylvia climbs the evergreen tree and spots the elusive white heron. Sylvia, demonstrating her harmony with nature, benignly scales the tree in search of the bird. She is caught up in the dilemma of whether she should alert the Ornithologist to the bird’s presence and receive the money her family desperately needs, or keep her silence (Jewett, 532-533). Although she ultimately chooses not to reveal the white heron’s location, her dilemma represents the overarching theme of the story: humans choose whether or not they will harm nature, and therefore they have the inherent ability to control it. The presence of this choice is essential to the connection between “A White Heron” and “The Open Boat.” In “The Open Boat,” the men do not have a choice. As previously discussed, no matter how much they persist, nature remains indifferent to them. In “A White Heron,” the two opposing characters represent the choices that humans have in terms of controlling nature. While Sylvia may choose not to manipulate nature, it is implied that she has the ability to control some elements of the natural world, whether she chooses to utilize this ability or not. In opposition, the Ornithologist clearly makes a choice in favor of using nature for his own benefit. Although he does not succeed in catching the elusive white heron, this one failure is a result of Sylvia’s personal choice. Ultimately, the essential choice speaks to the theme in “A White Heron” which demonstrates that humans have the ability to manipulate nature. Personal choice places them at the metaphorical center of the universe, where their judgement calls have a direct effect on the universe around them; thus, they have control over nature. This piece can be contrasted with Stephen Crane’s “The Open Boat,” which focuses on the more naturalistic theme that humans have little to no control in the face of nature, and that their lives are insignificant in the grand scheme of the universe.
