The Simple Life of Henry Thoreau in Walden
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived”(Thoreau 208). Thoreau uses this quote to show how aspects of transcendentalism, he wants to understand this world and nature and wants to relax and try to see only the surface of the world. In “from Walden”, transcendentalism emphasized living a simple life and celebrating the truth found in nature, emotion, and imagination. To begin with, Thoreau gives transcendentalism emphasized living a simple life in emotion from the Essay. According to the text “The light which puts out our eyes is darkness to us. Only that day dawns to which we are awake. There is more day to dawn. The sun is but a morning star” (Thoreau 216). The author uses emotion to show to the reader how life is simple. People need to be sober and see this world. Life is simple is it what people define it to be. “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer”(Thoreau 215). People can follow other new things anytime and anywhere, without their own opinions and ideas. Life is simple because people can easily without their own minds and can easily to change life. To sum up, transcendentalism emphasized living a simple life in emotion is people who are easily losing their mind and change their life.
In addition, the author uses in nature to show how transcendentalism emphasized living a simple life. According to the text, from “The pond in winter” Thoreau uses personification to show how simple life “Like the marmots in the surrounding hills, it closes its eye-lids and becomes dormant for three months or more”(Thoreau 211). Pond would take a break from work during the winter. But it is not useless, just quietly closed their eyes and waiting for spring. Another example from “spring”, “The change from storm and winter to serene and mild weather, from dark and sluggish hours to bright and elastic ones, is a memorable crisis which all things proclaim”(Thoreau 212). All turns are regular, nature is simple just different look at have different idea. All in all, nature is simple, life is simple. Transcendentalism emphasized living a simple life in nature is all turns are regular.
Moreover, Transcendentalism emphasized living a simple life and celebrating the truth found in imagination. According to the text, “who knows that beautiful and winged life, whose egg has been buried for ages under many concentric layers of woodenness in the dead dry of society, deposited at first in the laburnum of the green and living tree, which has been gradually converted into the semblance of its well-seasoned tomb…..”(Thoreau 216). New things are in front of you, no one knows what it really looks like. Like people, on the surface of some people every day happy, but the real appearance, no one knows. Thoreau want reader to know transcendentalism emphasized living a simple life and celebrating the truth found in nature, emotion, and imagination. All in all, life is simple and easy. On one hand, people always believe what others say. On the other hand, people can easily change their life.
