The Dreams and Illusions in the Glass Castle

We all have dreams, but reality always seem to get in the way. In the novel, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Rex Walls, the father of Jeannette is a drunk and is struggling to keep a job. Their whole goal is to keep food on the table but there’s been a bump in the road, we also have her mother, and she is an inspired artist. Also, we have her two sisters Lori and Maureen and these two are not very adventurous, but is always ready to face any challenge. As we move through the book we begin to find the roots of the family situation, They’re a poor family on a move to collect materials to help build their dream home, as they travel around the world they’ve lived with many people but this will soon come to an end. Rex began to work hard to keep food in the kids stomach but ends up losing the few jobs he did have. He started to collect certain stones to continue the journey but there’s always a few roadblocks. Her father biggest dream was to build this “Glass Castle,” but the true reality is that they’re poor family and is struggling to gather the materials to complete the task.

To begin, her father biggest dream was to build this “Glass Castle.” As the time progressed Rex got a few a jobs, but he couldn’t seem to keep them, through all of this they tried to work very hard to gather their materials and get it done. Meanwhile, while all of this is going on they’ve been on the move from house to house in search of gold. While this is going on the father has been working on an invention called the “prospector” which is a design to shift through the sand detecting and searching for gold nuggets. They soon began to live with Rex’s parents and this just made it harder for them, and throughout the journey the kids joined school, and they were being bullied for being poor, so Lori took it upon herself to help her parents keep food in their stomach, she stated “It’s really not that hard to put food on the table if that’s what you decide to do.”As time passed they were still living with Rex’s parents and struggling because Rex is now jobless once again, and they are no longer stable.

Meanwhile, reality is they’re a poor family and is struggling to gather the materials to complete this task, he began to work hard to keep food in the kids stomach but ends up losing the few jobs he had. Also, started to collect certain stones to continue this journey but there’s always a few roadblocks. As the story continues, this family has been stopped by the police multiple times, and they also have been chased by bill collectors due to them living in different houses and not being able to paaso that they can pursue their dreams. Of course the reality of it all is they still were unstable and not able to build the castle, In the end they are still hard-working and determined but the parents can’t seem to stop their bad habits.

In conclusion, this heart wrenching and slightly humorous memoir, journalist Jeannette Walls tells her crazy story about her dysfunctional and poverty-stricken upbringing. This family has been through a lot according to Jeanette, they have gone through poverty for almost her whole life and also not being able to be stabilized in one home. She focuses on her unconventional childhood with her parents, sisters and brother. Although her childhood was filled with disappointments and having to struggle for food, she still managed to remain unbitter. Dreams can go on for forever, it’s just the reality we worry about.
